Why the Rate Holds
Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.

What This Rate Does

How a Rear Spring Works
Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.
Applications
A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Installation
The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes.
