ls2-ff902-scope-ii-solid-matt-titanium-helmet
LS2 FF902 Scope II Solid Matt Titanium – Modular Touring Helmet ECE 22.06 P/J

Titanium is LS2's name for a warm mid-grey with a trace of metal in it, sprayed matt. It is the colour riders pick when the helmet should belong to the motorcycle rather than announce itself — and it is the finish that survives a working week better than anything else on this page.

Three shells for seven sizes

The size range runs XS to 3XL across three shells, split XS–S, M–L, XL–3XL. Weight is the consequence people feel first. A small rider in a one-shell helmet carries the same outer shell as a large one and pays for it in grams on the neck all day; here an XS wears a shell built for XS and S, and nothing more. The saving is not dramatic on paper and it is very noticeable at the end of a long ride.

About the matt titanium finish

There is a practical reason matt titanium outsells brighter finishes on commuter helmets, and it has nothing to do with taste. Road film — the fine grey mix of brake dust, diesel and rain thrown up at the front of a motorcycle — is very nearly this colour. On gloss black it reads as neglect after two wet rides. Here it is invisible until you actually wash the helmet. Matt also scatters light instead of reflecting it, so swirl marks and fine scratches never form the bright highlight that makes them visible, which counts on a chin bar handled at every fuel stop. The trade is honest: baked-on insects need soaking rather than wiping, and a matt surface that has been scrubbed hard stays dulled rather than polishing back.

HPTT: what the shell actually is

Injection-moulded HPTT is what this shell is, and the honest consequence appears on the scales further down this page. A polymer shell needs more material than a fibre one to reach the same energy absorption, and more material means more mass. LS2 has not hidden that and neither will we: the Scope II is not a light helmet, and the shell is the reason. What you get in exchange is a three-shell range at a price that normally buys one.

Ninety degrees, not one hundred and eighty

What ninety degrees means in practice is simple and worth being straight about. With the bar up you can drink, talk, take a phone call, show a face at a border post and get air onto a hot face at a standstill. What you should not do is ride at speed with it open. An upright chin bar is a sail: it catches air, it drums, and it puts a load on the pivots that they were not designed to take continuously.

What ECE 22.06 and the P/J label actually mean

Two letters and a number, and both halves are worth understanding. ECE 22.06 is the current European standard, mandatory for new helmets sold in the EU since January 2024. It tests up to eighteen impact sites where its predecessor tested five, uses multiple speeds, and measures rotational acceleration against the Brain Injury Criterion through an oblique drop.

P/J is the dual homologation. The helmet passed as a protective full-face and, separately, as a jet with the chin bar raised. Everything fitted to it — visor, sun visor, vent covers — is tested in place rather than removed for the exam, which is why a drop-down sun visor cannot simply be added to a helmet after approval.

Where it sits — and what SHARP actually tested

Where it sits in our range is straightforward: cheapest flip-up on the site, by a hundred and twenty euros. Everything in the table below that says flip-up carries the same core equipment — sun visor, Pinlock, emergency release, dual P/J. What changes going up the list is the shell and therefore the scales.

A note on SHARP, because it comes up. Their database has an FF902 Scope at three stars from May 2022. Read the entry carefully and it describes an ECE 22.05 helmet of 1.65 kg in six sizes — the previous generation. This helmet is 22.06, heavier, and built on three shells rather than the tested one's arrangement. The rating does not transfer.

Model

Type

Shell

Weight

RRP

FF820 Rapid III

Full-face

HPTT

1350 g

from 99 €

FF902 Scope II

Flip-up (P/J)

HPTT

1750 g

from 179 €

FF906 Advant

Flip-up (P/J)

KPA

1750 g

from 299 €

FF901 Advant X

Flip-up (P/J)

HPFC

1600 g

from 399 €

FF901 Advant X Carbon

Flip-up (P/J)

Carbon 6K

1550 g

from 469 €

COOLMAX, and where the air goes

Multi-density EPS deserves its own sentence, because it is doing more than the phrase suggests.
