Built to Homologate
The R existed so Ducati could race the Panigale in World Superbike. Titanium connecting rods, a two-ring piston, a lighter crankshaft and a rev ceiling nobody expected from a twin.
Two Hundred and Two Horsepower
From 1198 cc, with a redline at 12.000 rpm. Ducati was extracting numbers from a twin that inline fours were struggling to match, using a bore that had no business being that wide.
Carbon and Adjustment
The R came with carbon bodywork, a fully adjustable swingarm pivot and Öhlins at both ends. Very little was left standard, which is what makes the moulded throttle housing conspicuous.
Only the Housing
The switch block is untouched by this part. It is the throttle assembly alone, which suits a bike whose switchgear is still sound but whose cockpit deserves better than injection-moulded plastic.
Machined Bore
The tube's rotation is read by a position sensor, so play between it and the housing becomes imprecision at the throttle bodies. A cut bore holds its dimension where a moulded one drifts.
Black Anodising
Converted into the metal. On an R carrying carbon panels, black is the finish that adds nothing to a conversation the bodywork is already having.
Ergal Rather Than Aluminium Generally
The 7075 grade carries zinc and reaches around double the yield strength of ordinary machined alloy. On a component that gets clamped and unclamped repeatedly, that is the difference between a thread that lasts and one that does not.
The End of the Trellis
The 1199 was where Ducati stopped building superbikes around a steel frame. Purists complained for two years and then the lap times settled the argument.
