Thirteen Model Years on One Part
The S1000R arrived in 2013 as a detuned, upright reading of the RR and was reworked in 2021 with a new frame, a lighter engine and the asymmetric headlights finally dropped. Across both eras the right-hand controls kept their mounting, which is unusual for a motorcycle that otherwise changed almost completely in the middle of its run.
A Naked Bike Is Used Differently
Upright bars mean the wrist sits at a different angle over the cluster than it does on clip-ons, and the thumb reaches the buttons from above rather than from behind. An S1000R also does far more commuting than an RR ever will, which puts the switchgear through more cycles per kilometre and more weather per year.
Exposure Without a Fairing
There is no screen and no half fairing sending water around the bar on this bike. Rain arrives at the controls directly and stays there. The sealed switch elements and the anodised surface are the two things that decide whether the assembly still feels crisp after five winters, and both are specified above what BMW fitted.
Why Owners Change the Master Cylinder
The S1000R is a common candidate for a brake upgrade, partly because the standard setup was tuned for a broad audience and partly because the bike invites it. Once a radial cylinder is on, the clamp holes rarely line up with the original switch. This one is drilled for both arrangements, so the order of the two modifications stops mattering.
