The CP3 Triple
Yamaha's 847 cc three cylinder was mapped so aggressively at launch that they revised it. The engine has defined the marque's middleweight range ever since.
Two Hundred Grams
The module weighs about as much as a mobile telephone and the harness adds very little. This is not a component anybody buys or avoids on the basis of mass.
On a Current Machine
Euro 5 mapping is tighter and better resolved than anything before it, which means the gains are smaller and mostly confined to the transition off a closed throttle.
Against Flashing the Controller
A full remap can do considerably more and is considerably harder to undo. This module is the narrower, cheaper and entirely reversible option, and for a great many owners that is the right trade.
Rider Aids Are Blind to It
Traction control reads wheel speeds, not injector pulses. Nothing about the module's presence enters the calculation for any electronic aid on the motorcycle.
The Second Thing
Steady-speed hunting disappears or reduces. On a motorway at a constant opening a lean cruise setting produces a slow surge that riders stop noticing until it stops happening.
If Something Goes Wrong
Unplug it and the motorcycle is standard. That single sentence is worth more during a diagnosis than any amount of documentation, and it is not true of a reflashed controller.
The Owner Who Should Not
Someone chasing a number, someone with a standard and recent motorcycle, or someone who would rather have a full remap done properly by a specialist.
The Map Yamaha Had to Revise
The first MT-09 was mapped so abruptly at small openings that Yamaha softened it in a later model year, which is an unusually public admission that the transition off a closed throttle is difficult to get right. Owners of the early machines have the clearest case in the whole catalogue for a fuel correction.
