Mileage on a Speed Triple S is rarely built on grand tours. It accumulates in short hops, the commute, the errand, the Sunday loop, a few dozen kilometres at a time, across five model years and often more than one owner. Every one of those trips pulls a great deal of roadside air through a single element, and the fine mineral fraction in it does not stop at the airbox. That is the case the Sprint Filter P14 argues: a dry non-woven medium rated at 14 microns, chosen for retention rather than for flow.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven filtering medium at 14 microns, used without oil of any kind
- Flow rating of 1,800 l/m²/sec, the deliberate price of the finer medium
- Considerably more filtering material than the sports element it stands in for, in the same dimensions
- Direct fit in the series airbox; the fuelling map stays exactly as it is
- Regenerated with compressed air, or washed when it needs it, and used again
- Two years of cover from the purchase date, and a service life meant to match the motorcycle
Where the dust that gets through actually goes
Coarse grit is the easy part; almost any element catches it. What decides how an engine looks at high mileage is the fine, hard mineral dust that stays airborne. It is drawn in with the charge, works between piston ring and bore, and is carried down into the sump, where the oil circulates it past bearing surfaces until the next drain removes some of it. None of that is dramatic and none of it happens on one ride. It is the arithmetic of a long-lived motorcycle, and why a 14-micron specification suits a machine expected to keep running for years on ordinary roads.
The trade, stated plainly
Finer means more retained and less passed. The P14 sits between the P037 at 37 microns and the off-road T12 at 7 microns, and it flows 1,800 litres per square metre per second where the standard P08 flows 5,050. None of them is the better filter; they are answers to different air. If this Speed Triple S is ridden hard on clean roads, or turns up at the occasional track day, the P08 is the better-balanced element and there is no sense in paying flow for retention the bike does not need. The P14 belongs on the one that meets dust as routine.
Care and cleaning
The whole point of PM193P14 is that it comes out, gets cleaned and goes back in. Air does most of the work: aim the line at the downstream face, the one the engine draws from, and let the dirt leave by the route it came in. If it is properly dirty, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse it well. Then let it dry naturally and completely, never over a heater, never with a hot air gun, never near a flame, since heat will damage the medium. Do not oil it, ever. The cleaning sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Built for the Triumph Speed Triple S, 1050 cc, 2016 to 2020. It is one of three machines this element serves, alongside the Speed Triple R (2016–2017) and the Speed Triple RS (2018–2020), all sharing the same airbox. It seats in the standard housing in the original position.
