Owners of a Trident 660 who go looking for a filter medium find a shorter list than they expect. Sprint Filter builds four, but for this machine the catalogue offers two: the standard element, and this one — the SM223S F1-85, a dry woven polyester at 85 µm rated 15,000 l/m²/sec. The fine, dust-rated media are listed for the Tiger Sport 660 that shares the airbox, not for the Trident. That makes the decision genuinely binary, and it also settles a question that would otherwise be answered the wrong way round. A Trident ridden through dusty summers is not a case for a finer medium here, because none is offered. It is a case for cleaning the element you have more often.
Key Features
- Single-layer polyester weave, dry, aperture opened to 85 µm for the highest throughput
- Rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec against 5,050 for the standard road and track medium
- Retention of 95.22 % on 100 µ particles, measured by the manufacturer
- Around twice the filtering area of other performance filters, airbox untouched
- Never oiled, so no film is available to travel onto the air sensor
- Washable and reusable for the motorcycle's life; two-year warranty from the purchase date
Two media, and the line that separates them
Between the standard element and this one, exactly one row of the specification changes: how open the weave is, and therefore how much passes and how much is held. Everything else — the frame, the fit, the cleaning routine, the warranty, the expected life — is identical. Reading them as better and worse misses the point. A finer structure retains more and flows less; an opener one flows more and retains less of the fine fraction. Pick the end that matches your air.
The interval is the variable you control
Since no dust-rated option exists for this airbox, a Trident owner in a dusty region has one lever left, and it is a good one: frequency. A washable element can be inspected and blown through as often as the conditions ask, at no cost beyond twenty minutes, which is not true of a panel that has to be bought each time. None of this makes the bike quicker — a drop-in filter does not make a series Trident noticeably stronger — but it does keep the intake at a resistance you have chosen rather than one that has drifted.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean side, blown outwards through the weave, is the routine. Wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent when a season has loaded it, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry it in open air — never with heat, never near a flame. It goes back in dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Triumph Trident 660 built from 2021 to 2026. The Triumph Tiger Sport 660 of 2022 to 2026 shares this part number — two machines, one element. Confirm your model year in the Fitment tab.
