Sooner or later someone asks what this element is worth on a rolling road. It is a fair question and it deserves a careful answer, because the number most often quoted for a racing medium, 15,000 l/m²/sec, is not a dyno result at all. It is a bench measurement of how much air a square metre of this cloth passes under a fixed test condition. It describes a material. A dyno describes a motorcycle on a particular day, and the two are not the same kind of statement.
Key Features
- Racing-specification dry polyester weave, screening at 85 microns
- 15,000 l/m²/sec, the highest flow figure in the Sprint Filter range
- 95.22 per cent retention of 100-micron particles in the maker testing
- No oil at any stage, before fitting or after washing
- Series airbox, standard position, no modification and no remap
- Cleaned with compressed air and reused; two years of warranty
What a rolling road can and cannot settle
Back-to-back runs on the same afternoon, same fuel, same tyre pressures, same operator, with nothing changed but the panel, would be a genuine comparison. Almost nobody does it that way. What usually happens is a run in spring, a run in autumn, different air temperature and pressure between them, and a difference the correction factor was never meant to carry. Against that background it is worth saying plainly that no element inside a standard airbox makes an R 1300 R noticeably stronger. If a graph appears to show otherwise, the first suspect is the day, not the cloth.
The reason to buy it anyway, if there is one
Not the graph, then, but the duty cycle. This weave is drawn for repeated full-throttle work at high revs, and by Sprint Filter's own account it is the medium most widely used in MotoGP, Moto3, World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock, which is a manufacturer statement rather than an independent measurement. At 85 microns it screens slightly wider than the standard 80-micron weave, and that is the exchange the whole range is built on: coarser passes more and holds back less, finer does the reverse. For this airbox it asks close to two and a quarter times what the standard element costs, and a naked roadster used on the road will never call on the difference.
Care and cleaning
SM294S F1-85 is regenerated with compressed air played across the clean side and blown outward through the loaded face, which is the whole appeal of a washable element between sessions. Lukewarm water and a mild detergent are the next step when air is not enough. It dries in moving air only, never with heat and never near a flame, and returns to the airbox dry and unoiled. The maintenance sheet is filed in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for two machines, the BMW R 1300 R and the R 1300 RS of 2025 to 2026, as a direct replacement in the unmodified series airbox. The R 1300 GS is not covered by this number. The Fitment tab names both models with their year spans.
