A part bought once, over a long ownership

The arithmetic of a washable filter is not dramatic, but it runs in one direction. A paper element is a recurring line in the service bill for as long as the motorcycle is kept; the P08 is a single purchase that is cleaned and refitted instead, and Sprint Filter design it to last the life of the machine, with two years of warranty from the date of purchase. On a motorcycle that is kept for many years and often passed on to a second or third owner, that turns a consumable into a fixture.

The medium, and the choice behind it

The P08 is a single layer of woven polyester spun from threads of 22 microns and upwards, and it is used dry — no oil at any point, so nothing can be drawn onto the throttle body or the intake sensors, and no re-oiling can be done wrongly. Sprint Filter measured it retaining 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles, against 76.42 per cent for a four-layer oiled cotton filter. Finer media exist for harder conditions — the water-repellent P037 at 37 microns, the P14 at 14, the T12 at 7 — and each is a trade rather than an upgrade: the P14 passes 1,800 litres per square metre per second where the P08 passes 5,050. More retention always costs flow, and for ordinary road use the P08 is the balance point.

Care and cleaning

Service the PM186S with compressed air, starting on the clean side and working outwards. If more is wanted, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will do it, followed by rinsing until the water runs clear. Then leave it in open air until it is completely dry — no heat, no flame at any point — and refit it dry. There is no oil to reapply, because the polyester was never oiled.
