Sprint Filter P08 Air Filter for Road & Track – Ducati Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak (2016–2017) PM127S

The Pikes Peak version is named after a hill climb that finishes above four thousand metres, and the name is a useful reminder of something riders of ordinary Multistradas rarely think about: air gets thinner as you climb, and an engine has to draw a greater volume of it to make the same power. Anyone who rides Alpine passes is in a mild version of the same situation. The Sprint Filter P08 PM127S gives the intake roughly double the filtering surface, which is precisely the property that matters when the air arriving is worth less per litre.

Altitude and load stack up

The engine management compensates for thin air by metering less fuel, which keeps the mixture right and costs you power — that part is unavoidable physics. What is avoidable is losing more of it to a filter that has loaded over the season. Pressure drop rises with the volume being drawn through the element, and at altitude the engine is drawing a greater volume for the same output, on a road that is also asking for sustained high throttle. Both effects push in the same direction, and they arrive together on exactly the ride you bought this version for.

The Öhlins version deserves the attention

The Pikes Peak was the Multistrada with the proper suspension and the sportier ergonomics — the one bought to be ridden hard on good roads rather than commuted on. Keeping the intake at its designed restriction is worth more on that bike than on one that spends its life in traffic.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame. Refit dry.
