Staggered Bolts
The offset pattern for the second of the two clamp arrangements. It is invisible in a photograph and obvious the moment a screw refuses to reach its thread.
How a Contact Dies
Water reaches a terminal, oxidises it slowly and produces resistance rather than a clean break. The function degrades across months, which is why the fault is so often tolerated.
No Smaller Part
Ducati sells the block complete and nothing within it. A single hesitant switch therefore costs the whole assembly whichever supplier provides the replacement.
Repeatable Machining
A cutting programme produces the same dimension on the ten thousandth part as on the first. Injection tools wear and late parts differ from early ones measurably.
Ultraviolet on Plastic
The legends on a moulded block are printed and they fade within a few summers. Everything still works and nothing can be read, which is its own kind of nuisance.
What a Glove Can Read
Machined edges and defined travel give information a smooth surface withholds. On a superbike the eyes have somewhere considerably more useful to be.
An Engine Carrying the Frame
The Stradale is a stressed member with the front structure bolted to it and the swingarm pivoting in the crankcase. It is why the chassis is as compact as it is.
Fifteen Hundred Speciales
Ducati launched the V4 alongside a numbered Speciale with a titanium exhaust and carbon throughout. It sold out before deliveries began.
A Complicated Exhaust
The V4's system routes four into two into one into two, packaging under the engine while meeting emissions. It is considerably more involved than it looks from outside.
