For an R 1250 GS in dusty conditions Sprint Filter catalogues the seven-micron mat twice, under two part numbers, for the same airbox. The medium is identical in both. So is the fit, and so is everything on the care sheet. One difference is recorded, and it is this one: the catalogue credits this version with a hundred per cent more filtering surface. That is the entire decision, and it can be made properly in about a minute once you know which question it turns on.
Key Features
- Special non-woven polyester, dry, closing at 7 microns
- The doubled-area version of the element: a hundred per cent more surface, same medium
- Rated 560 l/m²/sec of material, identical between the two versions
- Free of oil throughout its life, with nothing able to reach the intake tract
- Sits in the standard airbox in place of the paper element, without a remap
- Air-line servicing for the life of the motorcycle, two years of warranty
The question it turns on
Not how dirty the air is, but how easily you can get to the airbox while you are in it. Two riders can meet the same piste and want different answers: one is out for a weekend and back in a workshop on Monday, the other is three weeks into a trip with the tools that fit under the seat. The second is buying the area. A doubled surface does not catch anything the standard version misses — it postpones the moment the element has to be dealt with, and that only has value if the moment would have been inconvenient.
Two decisions, not one
Which medium and how much of it are separate questions, and confusing them is the usual mistake. The medium decides what gets through and what it costs in air: seven microns against the standard weave's eighty, 560 l/m²/sec against 5,050, a trade paid continuously rather than a rung on a ladder. The area decides nothing about either. It decides how long the answer stays the answer. An owner who has concluded the extreme mat is wrong for their riding is not talked round by doubling it. Neither version is a power part: a standard R 1250 GS with either one in its airbox is exactly as strong as BMW built it.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air, applied to the clean face and driven outwards, is the whole routine in ordinary use, and on the extreme medium it is worth repeating often rather than saving up. Where a hard stretch has pressed the load in beyond the reach of air, hand-warm water with a little mild detergent lifts the rest and the mat is rinsed until nothing more washes out of it. Drying then takes as long as it takes, in circulating air alone, with no heat source and no flame permitted anywhere near it. The K142T12 goes back into the housing dry. The servicing sheet is filed under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the BMW R 1250 GS of 2019 to 2023, seated in the series airbox with nothing modified. Six machines share the part number: this GS and the five boxers of the 1200 generation that preceded it. The Fitment tab names each with its years.
