Read this element's fitment list expecting the usual thing and it surprises you. A dust medium ought, by reputation, to belong to the machines that leave the tarmac; not one GS appears on it. The six names are all road boxers — R, RS and RT in both generations — and the RT among them is the heaviest, most faired and most road-bound of the lot. The list is worth taking seriously, because it says something true about where dust actually comes from.

Where the dust is

Behind lorries, on roadworks, along field edges at harvest, in the grit left by a winter of salting, and in the fine material hanging over any dry city in August. That is a road inventory, not a trail one, and a machine covering long annual distances on sealed surfaces meets more of it in a year than a weekend trail bike does. The RT's own habits make the point: it is used for distance, in traffic, in every month of the year, and it draws its air from whatever is happening twenty metres ahead.

What the extra area answers

Exposure of that kind is not intense, it is continuous — and continuous loading is precisely what capacity is for. A mat with twice the surface takes twice as much of the year's fine material before its resistance starts to climb, at the identical fourteen-micron rating and the identical rated flow per square metre. Nothing about what it catches has moved. Nor has anything about what the motorcycle makes: an element inside a standard airbox does not make a standard R 1200 RT noticeably stronger, whatever its size. It simply carries the same protection further into the season.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air does the work, aimed at the engine-facing surface and driven outwards so that the load departs by the route it took getting in. Long road use tends to leave a film that air will not shift, and that is what the sink is for: hand-warm water, a little mild detergent, then rinsing until nothing more comes out. The element must be bone dry before it goes back — dried in moving air only, with no heat gun, no oven and no flame at any point — and the K142P14 is refitted with nothing applied to it.
