Somewhere in a range built on a trade there is usually one comparison that looks like a free lunch, and this is it. The racing medium is more open than the standard weave, 85 µm against 80, and yet it measured the higher retention: 95.22 % against 93.13 %. More flow and more filtration in the same breath reads like a straightforward improvement, which would make the choice on a ZT 155G an easy one. The figure deserves a closer look before it is used that way.

What the measurement covers

One particle size. The test compares media at 100 microns, comfortably larger than either opening, and reports how much of that fraction each one held. It says nothing about what happens well below 100 microns, which is where the difference between an 80 and an 85 micron aperture would actually be settled, and Sprint Filter publishes no figure there for either medium. A number covering one part of the range is evidence about that part of the range; a filter comparison is not built out of a single point.

Where the trade comes back

The catalogue answers the question itself. If the most open medium were also the best filter, the range would not need the 14 micron nonwoven listed for this very case at 1,800 l/m²/sec, the medium Sprint Filter puts forward for dust. The media are destinations, not rungs. On a road-going 155 the flow figure of the racing cloth has no obvious occasion, and no slot-in element makes a standard motorcycle noticeably faster; what any element in this housing delivers is the smaller, steadier benefit of a restriction that an air line puts back where it started.

Care and cleaning

Dust leaves the way it arrived, only backwards: compressed air on the clean face, worked outward through the weave. Where the deposit is oily, lukewarm water with a little mild detergent takes it off, and the element is rinsed until nothing more comes out. It dries in moving air at ambient temperature and by no other method, and the SM276S F1-85 is refitted dry, with nothing applied to it. Instructions are filed in the Downloads tab.
