By 2020 the Superquadro twin had been under development for eight years, and the Panigale V2 is where it ended: V4 bodywork, a six-axis inertial platform, and a chassis calibrated around what the software could be trusted to do. Every decision that suite makes — wheelie control, traction, engine braking — starts from a measurement of the air going into the engine. That one dependency is reason enough to think about what the airbox contains. PM127S is a dry element, and dry is the whole argument on this bike.

Adhesion has a direction
A tacky filter holds dust by sticking to it, and anything sticky enough to do that is also mobile once the box runs hot and the throttle stays open. Where it moves is downstream, because downstream is the only direction the air goes. A film on a sensing element does not break it — it makes it read low, the fuelling shifts to match a number that is no longer true, and the owner chases a fault that no diagnostic will ever name. Taking the oil out of the system removes that mechanism rather than merely reducing its odds.
Nothing to overdo
The other half of the argument is a human one. Re-oiling a gauze properly means applying an exact quantity to an exactly dry filter, and in a home garage both halves get rushed. This element has no such step: out, cleaned, back in. It is worth being plain about what that buys — the power curve stays where Ducati left it — but the restriction the engine works against returns to its original value every single time, for as long as the bike is yours.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air from the clean side, directed outward, covers ordinary service. For a deeper clean use hand-warm water and a mild washing-up liquid, rinsing until the run-off is clear, then let it air-dry completely; heat in any form, a hot-air gun included, damages the cloth.
