DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08423-65 is a pair of fork springs rated at 6.5 N/mm, 300 mm long with a 25.5 mm inner diameter. Rate decides where in the stroke the fork sits; damping only decides how fast it gets there.

Key Features

  • 177 mm of usable stroke
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Free length 300 mm
  • Öhlins part number 08423-65
  • Inner diameter 25.5 mm
  • Measured spring rate 6.5 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Why the Rate Holds

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

Size and Rate

Free length 300 mm, inner diameter 25.5 mm, rate 6.5 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing 6.5 N/mm

Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

Fitting

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
