DescriptionThe whole story▼

Riding the XSR900 on a wet day is mostly about what lies on the road: painted markings, manhole covers, tram lines and, in autumn, wet leaves. Each of them offers the rear tyre a fraction of the grip of dry tarmac, and the moment it is most likely to slip is when you pull away with a strong engine behind it. A clutch lever that lets you feed in the take-up gently helps, and Accossato's ESY688 is one: machined from aluminium, listed for the XSR900 from 2016 to 2020 and adjustable for its distance to the grip.

Key Features

  • Clutch lever for the XSR900, listed for 2016 to 2020
  • Fits at the original clutch mounting
  • Adjustable distance between blade and grip
  • Standard blade of about 138 mm in all seven colours
  • Short blade in five colours, long blade in four
  • Machined aluminium, anodised, black hub
  • Fixed one-piece blade

Construction and Material Quality

Cuffs, glove seams and the cover pulled over the bike at night all rub against a clutch lever sooner or later. The anodised surface of the ESY688 is considerably harder than bare aluminium and far harder than paint, so everyday contact leaves fewer marks. Accossato machines the lever from aluminium on CNC equipment before anodising it, black on the hub and coloured on the blade. The blade is fixed, with no folding joint, and the take-up point stays put ride after ride.

Wet Paint and Manhole Covers

When the rear tyre loses grip on pulling away, it usually happens in the first metre, as the clutch takes up and the drive arrives. On a slippery patch the aim is to let the drive build gradually, with low revs and a slow release through the friction zone, so the tyre never gets more than it can hold. That is hard to do with a lever that bites at the very end of a long stretch. Set the ESY688 so the take-up begins with your fingers comfortably curled, and practise the slow release in the dry until it becomes habit. Better still, stop your XSR900 so the rear wheel is not sitting on the white line or the metal cover in the first place; a little foresight at the stop line saves a lot of clutch work.

Fitment and Compatibility

In Accossato's list, the XSR 900 entry for 2016 to 2020 names the ESY688. It mounts at the XSR900's original clutch mounting and replaces the stock lever; newer XSR900 generations are not covered by this entry. The front brake lever for the same bikes is Accossato's EDF016, listed for the same years, which makes it easy to order the pair in one colour.

Road Approval

A German ABE is not on file for the ESY688, so it is sold as a track part.
