DescriptionThe whole story▼
Autumn can be a fine season on an FZ8: quiet roads, low sun, the last warm afternoons. It is also the season when the front tyre has the least to work with. Cold tarmac, damp patches under the trees and wet leaves in the bends all call for a front brake that can be used gently. The Accossato EDF016 is a brake lever for the FZ8 of 2011 to 2015, machined from aluminium and fitted to the original master cylinder, with a reach you can set for whatever gloves the season asks for.
Key Features
- Brake lever for the Yamaha FZ8, 2011 to 2015
- Mounts on the original master cylinder
- Distance between blade and grip adjustable
- Standard blade about 138 mm; short and long blades in selected colours
- Aluminium, CNC-machined and anodised
- Black hub with a coloured blade
- Rigid, no folding joint
- No German ABE documented; for use on the track
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato machines the EDF016 out of solid aluminium and anodises it, black at the hub and in one of seven colours along the blade. The reach adjuster sits in the hub next to the pivot, clear of wet gloves. Because the blade is a single rigid piece, a light squeeze produces an equally light response at the master cylinder, with no hinge taking up the first part of the movement. Rain and road spray do not harm the anodised surface, and a wipe with a damp cloth removes the grime of an autumn ride.
Cold Tyres and Autumn Leaves
A tyre on a cold autumn morning takes longer to reach a temperature at which it grips well, and a patch of wet leaves offers hardly any grip at all. Neither situation calls for less braking, but both call for braking that begins gently: a first squeeze that loads the front tyre progressively before the full force comes in. That first squeeze depends a great deal on how the fingers meet the lever. With thick autumn gloves, a blade set for summer can sit too far out, so the fingertips catch it and the pressure comes in with a jerk. Bring the reach in when the season changes, until the blade lies under the middle of your fingers in your warm gloves. On the FZ8 the standard blade is closest to the original feel, while the long one gives gloved fingers more to hold. And where leaves cover a bend, get the braking done on the straight before it.
Fitment and Compatibility
On Accossato's list, the EDF016 covers the FZ8 from 2011 to 2015 in three forms: the FZ8, the naked FZ8 N and the half-faired FZ8 S. It takes the place of the stock blade on the original master cylinder. On the clutch side, the ESY688 is given for the same years.
Road Approval
For the EDF016 no German ABE is on file, and it is offered for track use only.
