Start with the case against. The P14 is rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec where the P08 weave for this same airbox is rated at 5,050, and an S 1000 RR is one of the few road engines with any prospect of asking for the difference. If the machine is used for track sessions, or ridden hard and high in the rev range on clean surfaces, the honest recommendation is the standard element rather than this one. What follows is the narrower case in which PM171P14 is the right part, and it is a case about roads rather than about motorcycles.
Key Features
- Special dry nonwoven, oil-free from new, so nothing on the medium can travel downstream
- 14 µm filtration at a rated 1,800 l/m²/sec: the fine end of the range, made for dust and distance
- Finer holds more back and lets less through — a trade between two properties, not a step up a ladder
- The same airbox is also catalogued for the P08 at 80 µm and 5,050 l/m²/sec for ordinary use
- Direct replacement in the standard airbox: nothing cut, nothing moved, factory mapping untouched
- Washed and refitted instead of discarded, specified for the life of the machine, two-year guarantee
What dusty conditions actually names
Not a desert. It names what a motorcycle is ridden through: harvest traffic on a back road in August, a resurfacing site with grit still loose across the lane, a gravel yard at the end of every ride out, a dry region where fine material hangs in the air. Those are properties of a route and a season, and they are the only reason to accept a lower flow figure. An owner who rides in clean air has nothing to gain here; the specification is worth choosing from the worst month of the year, not an average one.
Which S 1000 RR this is
This part number belongs to the machine redesigned for 2019 and built through to 2026. An S 1000 RR from 2010 to 2018 is a different motorcycle underneath an identical name, with a different airbox and a different Sprint Filter number, so the year of first registration settles the order and the badge does not. Whichever generation is in the garage, the limit of the claim is the same: an element in an unmodified airbox does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger. What it offers is filtration chosen for the conditions and a part that is cleaned instead of bought again.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air is the routine, applied to the clean side of the PM171P14 and directed outward so the load leaves the way it entered. When air no longer clears it, lukewarm water and a mild washing-up detergent will, rinsed through until the water runs clear. Then it dries in moving air and nothing else — no hot-air gun, no radiator, no flame, because heat is what ends the medium. It goes back in dry, with nothing sprayed on it and nothing to re-oil. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Cut for the airbox of the BMW S 1000 RR built from 2019 to 2026. Three machines share this element: the S 1000 RR, the S 1000 R of 2021 to 2026 and the M 1000 RR of 2021 to 2024.
