DescriptionThe whole story▼
Designed around the racetrack, the R1 of 2015 still spends much of its life in town: the ride to work, the run to a café, the crawl through traffic before the open road. That is where the clutch works hardest, and on a bike with low bars and a committed riding position it is also where the left hand has the least comfort to spare. The Accossato ESV04A is a CNC-machined aluminium clutch lever for the R1 of 2015 to 2021, with adjustable reach and three blade lengths.
Key Features
- Clutch lever for the Yamaha R1, 2015 to 2021, including the R1 S
- Mounts at the original clutch mounting
- Reach to the grip adjustable
- Long blade available for a lighter pull
- Standard blade about 138 mm, in all seven colours
- Black anodised hub, CNC-machined aluminium
- Rigid lever without a folding joint
Construction and Material Quality
The ESV04A is milled from aluminium on CNC machines and then anodised. Its hub is black and holds the pivot and adjuster; its blade comes in black, silver, red, blue, gold, green or orange. Machining leaves an accurate pivot bore and a blade of even section, and anodising gives a hard surface that stands up well to daily use. There is no hinge in the lever. Whether the bike is crawling through town or leaving a pit lane, the clutch engages through one fixed piece of metal.
A Superbike in Town
In a supersport riding position, part of your weight rests on your hands, and in slow traffic there is no wind to hold your chest up as there is at speed. Holding the clutch at a red light with the fingers stretched out adds tension to a wrist that is already loaded. Over half an hour in a city, that turns into tired forearms and a clumsy left hand just when a precise one is needed. Bringing the blade closer to the grip helps straight away: the fingers wrap round the lever rather than reaching for it, and the wrist can stay in a more neutral position. The long ESV04A adds leverage, so the clutch needs less force to hold in; it is made in blue, gold, green and orange. A few habits help as well. Grip the tank with your knees to take weight off your arms, select neutral at long stops, and loosen your hands whenever the traffic allows. None of this turns the R1 into a commuter, but it makes the city section of the journey kinder to the body.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the ESV04A for the R1 from 2015 to 2021, naming both the R1 and the R1 S. It replaces the original lever at Yamaha's clutch mounting. For 2022 to 2024 bikes, Accossato gives a different clutch lever, the ESY688, which it also lists for the R1 of 1998 to 2014. The brake side of the 2015 to 2021 R1 is covered by the EDR015, and a second brake lever, the EDR019, is also listed for those years under a reference called R1 SP.
Road Approval
Since there is no documented German ABE for the ESV04A, it is offered for the circuit rather than the road.
