The words that follow the medium name in the title belong to Sprint Filter, not to this motorcycle. They are the designation for a material, and they travel with the code onto every machine it fits. The Vitpilen 401 is the most road-biased entry on that list: flat bars, cast wheels, street rubber, no pretence at all about leaving the tarmac. Nothing in the designation forecasts where the bike goes. It names a cloth — a dry nonwoven filtering at 14 microns and passing 1,800 litres per square metre per second.
Key Features
- Dry nonwoven medium, 14 microns of filtration, 1,800 l/m²/sec of flow
- Nothing is oiled, so nothing can thin in the wet or creep towards a sensor
- Around twice the filtering area of other performance filters
- Enters the series airbox exactly as supplied: no modification and no remapping
- Cleaned with compressed air and used again, service after service
- Specified by Sprint Filter to last as long as the motorcycle; two years of warranty
A name on the material, not a claim about the bike
Media designations get written once, against a laboratory specification, and are then printed on every fitment the housing reaches. That is how a fine dust cloth ends up catalogued for a street roadster. Read the other way round it is quite useful: since the label cannot describe your riding, the question it leaves you with is a concrete one. Does your year contain air with a visible load in it, often enough to be worth surrendering rate for? If not, the standard weave is Sprint Filter's own answer for road use, and it is the cheaper part as well.
What the exchange looks like in figures
Against 80 microns and 5,050 litres per square metre per second for the standard cloth, this one gives 14 microns and 1,800. Retention improves substantially, flow falls to roughly a third, and both halves apply every time the engine runs. What can be said without hedging is that no drop-in element makes a standard machine quicker, least of all one homologated inside the A2 category — the honest benefit is a restriction that begins below a paper panel's and is restored by washing rather than by buying.
Care and cleaning
Take the PM293P14 out, hold an air line to its clean face and work outward until the medium stops giving anything up. That is the routine, and it consumes nothing. Where the load has gone tacky, tepid water with a mild detergent lifts it, followed by rinsing until nothing more discolours the run-off. Afterwards the element wants air, space and patience: no heat source of any kind may come near it, and it goes back into the box only when dry through. Sprint Filter's maintenance instructions are attached in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 built between 2024 and 2026, in the standard airbox in place of the original element. Seven entries in the current Husqvarna and KTM range are covered by this code; the Fitment tab lists them with their model years. The preceding Vitpilen 401, built to 2023, runs a different Sprint Filter part.
