Most motorcycles are owned for a few years and then sold, and the arithmetic of maintaining them reflects that. The NM4 Vultus is not most motorcycles. Built for three model years, sold in small numbers and bought by people who wanted precisely that object rather than transport, it belongs to the small category of machines that get kept — and once the intended horizon is decades rather than seasons, the calculation behind a filter medium changes shape. The Sprint Filter P14 PM181P14 is the element for that horizon: 14 micron filtration from a dry non-woven, in exchange for airflow this engine was never going to use.

Paying with flow you never use

Every step towards finer filtration is paid for in airflow. Whether that price hurts depends entirely on whether the engine wanted the flow in the first place. The NM4's 745 cc parallel twin is a low-revving, torque-led unit driving through a dual-clutch gearbox that keeps it well below its ceiling in ordinary use; it spends its life in the part of the map where intake capacity is not the limit. Handing over the difference between 5,050 and 1,800 l/m²/sec therefore costs this particular motorcycle very little that it would ever have spent — while the finer medium goes on holding back the fine fraction of every kilometre.

Small production run, ordinary part number

Three model years is not much of a supply base for consumables, and dealers stock what moves. The PM181P14 avoids that trap twice over. It is not an NM4 part but the element for the whole NC parallel-twin platform, five machines' worth of demand behind one part number — and it is not a consumable at all, because it is cleaned and refitted rather than thrown away. The one thing worth being clear about: if the Vultus mostly covers clean sealed roads, the coarser P08 is the more balanced choice, and the P14 is the answer to dusty air rather than to careful ownership.

Care and cleaning

Under all that bodywork the element is the easy part. Compressed air from the clean side, worked outwards, and it is done; when it has earned more, lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear, then left in open air until it is dry right through — never with heat, never with a flame.
