Sand is the part everybody pictures and the part that matters least. Anything visible moving across the ground is stopped by any filter worth fitting, including the paper element the bike left the factory with. The load that decides whether an engine reaches a high mileage is the fraction you cannot see: fine mineral particles that stay airborne for a long time and are hard enough to abrade a bore. The Sprint Filter T12 is built for that fraction — a dry polyester special non-woven filtering to 7 microns at a rated 560 l/m²/sec, the finest medium in the range — and the 2016 and 2017 Tiger Explorer XCx, XCa and XR are the machines people ride to where it is found.
Key Features
- Sprint Filter offers no finer medium: dry polyester special non-woven, 7 microns
- Dry throughout: no oil to be drawn onto the air sensor or into the throttle bodies
- Rated 560 l/m²/sec — written for extreme conditions, off-road use and desert dust
- It replaces the standard element in the unmodified airbox, with nothing remapped
- Regenerated with compressed air and refitted, not thrown away and bought again
- The warranty lasts two years from the date of purchase
The fraction that gets through
A coarse medium is not careless, it is a deliberate setting. The P08 opens to 80 microns and is rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec because road and track use rewards flow. Step down to the P14 at 14 microns and 1,800, then to this element at 7 and 560, and each step keeps more of the fine mineral load out at the price of headroom you may never call on. What does get past a filter is not finished at the cylinder wall; it leaves with the oil and keeps travelling through the engine. That is the argument for the PM202T12 in dry, dusty country — and the argument against it everywhere else, which is worth stating rather than hiding.
One airbox, a two-year listing
The XCx, XCa and XR of 2016 and 2017 sit in an awkward corner of the catalogues: a short entry between generations, written with a displacement of 1215 where the later listings say 1200. Filters are catalogued by airbox rather than by badge or model year, which is why one element covers both sides of that line, and why the fitment list is safer to order against than the figure on your registration document. For the owner of a short-run listing that is the practical benefit — the part stays available, because it was never a two-year part.
Care and cleaning
Applied from the clean side and blown outwards, compressed air is the routine service. When more is needed the element is washed in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinsed until the water runs clear, then left to dry completely in open air. Heat and flame must never speed that up, and a damp element is never refitted. There is no oiling step at any stage. Downloads holds the maintenance sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Triumph Tiger Explorer XCx, XCa and XR listed as 1215 and built in 2016 and 2017. Six Tiger Explorer listings share this element, from the 2011 machines through to the 2022 editions; the complete list is in the Fitment tab.
