DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60480-12 is a shock absorber spring rated at 16-26 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • 130 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 16-26 N/mm (progressive)
  • Öhlins part number 60480-12
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Progressively wound
  • Free length 230 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 230 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 16-26 N/mm.

Rate and the Linkage

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.

Installation

Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
