DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08437-49 is a pair of fork springs rated at 4.9 N/mm, 455 mm long with a 44.6 mm inner diameter. Getting the rate right restores the static sag the chassis was designed around.

Key Features

  • Supplied as a pair
  • Free length 455 mm
  • Inner diameter 44.6 mm
  • Measured spring rate 4.9 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 08437-49

Manufacture and Tolerance

Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

The Numbers That Matter

The 44.6 mm bore and 455 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 4.9 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

A rate this low belongs on a long-travel machine or under a light rider — it lets the fork use its full stroke instead of riding high and skating over the surface. Expect more sag and more movement — that is the point, not a fault. Soft rates like this are what off-road and adventure forks need: the wheel has to follow the ground, not deflect off it. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.

What Fitting Involves

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
