DescriptionThe whole story▼

When Yamaha launched the new R1 for 2015, it was plainly built with the circuit in mind, and many owners have treated it that way ever since. One of the first questions a circuit rider asks about a superbike concerns the shift pattern. Accossato's FT070 is an adjustable aluminium rearset for the R1 from 2015 to 2023 that can be set up for the standard pattern or reversed, the arrangement many racers use. It places the feet further back than stock, with knurled pegs and lever tips and aluminium heel guards.

Key Features

  • Adjustable rearsets for the Yamaha R1, 2015 to 2023
  • Shift pattern standard or reversed (race)
  • Aluminium, with a simple, functional design
  • Knurled footpegs and knurled lever tips
  • Aluminium heel guards
  • Footpegs further back than the original position
  • All black or black with blue details
  • No German ABE on record; for track use

Construction and Material Quality

Accossato builds the FT070 in aluminium and calls its design simple and functional. Knurled footpegs and knurled tips on the gear lever and brake pedal give the boots grip, and aluminium heel guards complete the kit. The rearsets are adjustable according to Accossato, though the product text does not say how the adjustment works or how far it reaches; we do not add details the supplier leaves out. You can order the set in all black or in black with blue details.

Why Racers Turn the Pattern Upside Down

With the standard pattern you change up by lifting the lever with the toe of your left boot. On the road that is second nature. On a circuit the awkward moment comes on the exit of a left-hand corner. The R1 is still leaned to the left, the left footpeg is close to the track surface, and there is very little room between lever and tarmac for a boot toe to get underneath. With the reversed pattern the movement is turned round: you press down to change up and lift to change down. Pressing down is easy even at full lean, so upshifts on the exit of left-handers become a simple push with the ball of the foot. Downshifts, which happen while braking hard with the bike more or less upright, become a lift of the toe, and there is room for that at that moment. If you have never ridden with a reversed pattern, allow time to get used to it and practise on a quiet track day before you race. A reversed pattern on a road bike would catch out anyone else who rode it, which is one more reason to keep it for the circuit.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the FT070 for the R1 from 2015 to 2023. For the bikes of 2015 and 2016 it also offers a second kit, the FT071, and its description does not explain how the two differ, so if your R1 is from one of those years, ask us before ordering. We recommend a workshop for the installation. Changing to the reversed pattern means altering the shift linkage, and the brake pedal needs its free play and a working brake light. All fasteners should be tightened to Yamaha's specification, with thread locker as required, and the position tested on the stand before the first session.

Road Approval

There is no German ABE or Teilegutachten on file for the FT070. It is sold for racing and track days.
