Groms travel in company. It is a machine bought for that as much as for the journey — ride-outs, meets, laps of a paddock at somebody else's race weekend. That habit changes what the engine breathes. Whoever leads gets clean air; everybody behind gets air that eight or ten sets of tyres have just lifted off the road, and the finest part of it stays up long enough for the next machine to draw in. The Sprint Filter P14 PM180P14 is made for that sort of air: a dry non-woven medium rated at 14 microns, specified for dust rather than for flow.
Key Features
- A dry non-woven mat, oil-free, so nothing can lift off it and travel downstream
- Rated at 14 microns, with an airflow figure of 1,800 litres per square metre per second
- About double the filtering area of a comparable sports element
- Goes into the standard airbox where the paper element sat: nothing cut, no remapping
- Serviced with air and put back rather than replaced; built to last the bike out
- Sprint Filter covers the element for two years after it is bought
Air that somebody else has already stirred
A group changes the sample. Every wheel in front lifts what is lying on the surface; the heavy grains drop back within a few metres, while the fine mineral fraction stays up and drifts along the line the group is taking. What it means is that the air reaching the airbox of the bike at the back is weighted towards small particles — precisely the fraction a coarser weave passes on. That is the case for a 14-micron medium here: not a part for gravel roads, but one for air carrying more fines than the road suggests.
What the 14 microns cost, and whether this engine notices
Finer means more held back and less passed through, and the range states it plainly: the P08 weave sits at 80 microns and 5,050 litres per square metre per second, the P037 at 37 and 4,500, this P14 at 14 and 1,800, the T12 at 7 and 560. That is a trade, not a ladder. What it costs depends on the machine, and a 125 built to a licence class has its ceiling set long before the filter: displacement and the rev range decide how much air the engine can ever ask for, and that sits below what the airbox could deliver. The headroom given up here was never being called on. It makes the bike no quicker — an intake element does not do that — but it holds the restriction near where it started instead of letting it climb between services.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air is the routine: put the line on the clean face so the dirt leaves the way it arrived. A hard season justifies a wash in lukewarm water with mild detergent, rinsed until it runs clear. Drying happens in moving air and nothing else — a hairdryer, a heat gun or a flame will finish the element off. Refit the PM180P14 only when it is dry through. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the Honda Grom built from 2014 to 2019. The same element serves the MSX125 of 2013 to 2019, this machine under Honda's other model name, so two entries cover one airbox. Both are in the Fitment tab.
