Most product names in this category are moods. This one is a measurement: the 85 in F1-85 is the micron rating of the cloth, and it sits above the 80 of the standard weave rather than below it. Read the whole range by its figures and it stops resembling a ladder — 85 µm at 15,000 l/m²/sec, 80 µm at 5,050, 14 µm at 1,800 — three positions on a single trade, with the most open of them carrying the racing name. Nothing is tucked behind the word; the specification is in the name.

Reading the range by its figures

The three media offered for this airbox differ in exactly one variable. Frame, sealing face and fixing are shared, and only the cloth changes, so the entire decision is which pair of numbers suits the riding. A finer cloth holds more and passes less; a more open one passes more and lets a larger share of the fine fraction through. Calling any of the three a better version of the others means ignoring one of its two numbers, which is how this category usually goes wrong.

Where it belongs, and where it does not

A ceiling three times the standard becomes visible only when something presses against it: full throttle held high in the range, repeated often enough that the intake turns into the part under load. On the road that condition does not arrive, so nothing will be felt — a drop-in element does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger, and a more open weave leaves that sentence intact. It is not the answer to dust either, where the range points the other way, to the 14 µm non-woven. This one is bought for sessions rather than for journeys.

Care and cleaning

Cleaned dry, like every medium in the range. Lay an air line on the clean side of the CM196S F1-85 and work outwards until the weave reads evenly against the light. Water with a little mild detergent is for greasy contamination only, followed by a full rinse. Then open air until it is completely dry — no heater, no hot-air gun, no flame, because heat is what ends one of these elements — and refit it untreated.
