The Z900RS carries a shape from 1972 over a motorcycle built to current emissions rules, and the disguise reaches as far as the parts counter. The engine comes from the Z900 and the service schedule reads almost the same, yet Sprint Filter lists a panel of its own for each: the PM166S belongs to the RS, the Z900 has its own number, and the finer P14 element of the family is listed for both together. Intake parts are catalogued by the box they sit in rather than by the engine in front of it, so the reliable way to buy one is by element code and model year.
Key Features
- A single layer of woven polyester, run dry — no oil to apply, top up or wash out
- 80 microns of filtration at 5,050 l/m²/sec, the road and track setting of the range
- Polyester thread from ø 22 microns upwards; the opening is a weave, not pressed pulp
- Roughly double the working surface of the usual performance element
- Sits where the paper panel sat in the series airbox — nothing cut, no remap
- Cleaned and put back for the life of the bike; two years of warranty from purchase
A panel is a shape before it is a specification
An element has two halves that are easy to confuse. One is the medium, where the published figures live. The other is the moulded frame that carries it: outline, depth, the line the seal presses against. That half belongs to one airbox and transfers to nothing else. Kawasaki gave the RS its own tank and covers, and once the surrounding hardware moves the element number moves with it. It is the same reason a fitment list can cross model names and brands without anything strange having happened — the list follows the box, not the badge.
What the cloth is actually worth
Plainly: this panel will not make a standard Z900RS noticeably stronger, and nothing dropped into a series airbox ever has. A filter hands back only the restriction it caused itself. What the P08 settles is where that restriction sits and how steady it stays. Paper gathers dust and gives none of it back, so its resistance only climbs; woven polyester is cleaned with an air line and returns to the condition it started in. Sprint Filter measured 93.13 per cent retention of 100-micron particles for the dry P08 against 76.42 per cent for four-layer oiled cotton.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does most services on its own: hold the line against the clean face and blow outwards, so the dirt leaves by the way it arrived. Where a salted winter leaves more than air will shift, wash the panel in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Dry it right through in moving air — never with heat and never over a flame — and refit it dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Cut for the series airbox of the Kawasaki Z900RS built from 2018 to 2026. The code covers exactly one machine: there is no second model to cross-check against, so the code and the year are the whole answer. The entry appears under the Fitment tab.
