The Working Side
Indicators at every junction, modes on the move, the display constantly. On a naked bike used for real journeys the left block does several times the work of the right.
Sunlight All Day
With no bodywork the switchgear is fully exposed. Printed legends on a moulded shell fade faster here than anywhere else Ducati fits them.
Sharper Temperature Swings
No fairing means the cockpit heats and cools faster and further. Moulded plastic takes a permanent set under that and aluminium is entirely indifferent.
Snap Fittings Under Vibration
Two halves clipped together on a motorcycle ridden hard. Across seasons the tension goes and the block begins to move slightly against the bar.
A Layer, Not a Coating
Anodising penetrates the aluminium. On a naked bike whose cockpit is visible from every angle, a finish that dulls rather than chips is the only sensible choice.
Reversible
Nothing spliced anywhere in the loom. The standard block returns in twenty minutes, which keeps a modified motorcycle straightforward when it is sold.
Weight Instead of Power
A hundred and twenty horsepower at 178 kilograms. Ducati took mass out where the rest of the class was adding output, and the result is a better road bike.
A New Twin
The 890 shares nothing meaningful with the Superquadro. Designed without a capacity rule to satisfy, it could be optimised for tractability instead.
Turns in a Street
Enough steering lock to manoeuvre without a three-point turn. It sounds trivial and it is the difference between a bike that gets ridden and one that gets admired.
Weight Where It Counts
Ducati took mass out of the crankcases, the frame and the wheels rather than deleting equipment to reach a headline figure. That is the slow and expensive route to a light motorcycle, and it is the one that still feels right after five years of ownership rather than only in a road test.
