Everything about the extreme cloth arrives twice on this machine. The CRF1100L breathes through a pair of airboxes, so it takes two elements, and each of them is rated at 7 µm and 560 l/m²/sec against the 80 µm and 5,050 of the standard weave for the same housings. Two elements to buy, two to remove, two to wash, and — the part that catches people out on a trip — two that have to be completely dry before the bike moves again. PM204T12 is a sound choice for the right air, but it is a doubled decision rather than a single one.

The logistics nobody plans for

Cleaning is straightforward; drying is what costs a day. A dense mat holds water, and it must not be forced dry — no heat source of any kind, which rules out every quick method available on the road. On a machine with one element that is an evening. On this one it is two evenings-worth of the same wait, in parallel, and the bike is not going anywhere until both are ready. This is the practical argument for carrying a second pair on a long dusty route rather than a single spare.

Where this cloth earns its place

The T12 is specified by the air, not by the registration document. It belongs where dust is a standing condition rather than an event — sand, desert tracks, ground where what passes a looser weave is measured in engine life. On most European adventure routes the dirt arrives wet rather than airborne, and a dense mat is the least happy of the range with a wet load; there the standard PM204S at 80 µm, or the finer PM204P14 at 14 µm and 1,800 l/m²/sec, sit at the more useful end of the same trade. More retention always costs flow. No element makes a standard Africa Twin stronger, and this one deliberately gives flow away — twice.

Care and cleaning

Service both elements together so the pair stays in step. Compressed air on the clean face, blowing outward, lifts most of the load; where it does not, wash PM204T12 in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Then leave them alone in still air. No hairdryer, no exhaust, no flame, and nothing goes back into a housing damp or treated with anything.
