Two things are given up when the fine medium goes into the airbox, and they are not the same kind of loss. Flow is lent: 1,800 l/m²/sec instead of 5,050, and it returns the moment the element is cleaned or the standard weave goes back in. Particles that get through are spent: whatever a coarser cloth admitted is in the engine, and no service reverses it. PM213P14 is the choice an R nineT owner makes when the second column matters more, and on a bike people keep, it usually does.
Key Features
- Dry non-woven filtering at 14 microns against the standard weave's 80
- Flow rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec, traded for the finer retention
- No oil at any point, so nothing can travel onto the sensors
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of a typical performance element
- Direct replacement for the paper panel in the standard airbox, no remap
- Washable and refitted many times over, two years of warranty
The column that compounds
Restriction is a state: it exists while the element is in the box and ends when it comes out. Ingestion is a history, and it accumulates. Across five years of ownership the flow given up is the same figure every year, while whatever the fine material kept out adds to what it kept out before. That is the case for the mat on a motorcycle somebody means to keep, and against it on one bought to be sold on. Neither version is about power: anything fitted inside a standard airbox leaves a standard R nineT making standard power.
What the choice costs to reverse
Very little, worth knowing beforehand. Both media are the same shape and go into the same unmodified box, so a mat that proves too fine for the roads ridden is swapped back in the time it takes to lift the panel out. The two also sit within about three per cent of each other on the price list, so price casts no vote — a surprise only if one expects finer to mean dearer, which here it usually does not. What decides is the road: dusty often enough to be worth 1,800 l/m²/sec, or not.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean side of the PM213P14, blown outward, lifts the load off the way it came. Never the other way: this material catches through its depth, and a blast from the dirty face settles dust where it does its work. Where a gritty stretch leaves more than air can shift, lukewarm water and a mild detergent finish the job, rinsed until it runs clear. Then air-drying at room temperature, because heat rather than mileage finishes one of these, and back into the box dry and unoiled. The Downloads tab holds the maintenance sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the BMW R nineT of 2021 to 2024, the roadster's last years, in the standard airbox without modification. Three machines are listed here: this R nineT plus the R12 and R12 nineT of 2025 and 2026, which inherited the housing. Two exclusions matter. The 2014 to 2016 R nineT takes a different number, and so does every R nineT Scrambler: the Scrambler stayed on its own number through 2024, so a 2022 Scrambler and a 2022 roadster do not share a filter despite name and year. The Fitment tab names all three.
