The case for finer filtration is never made on a dynamometer. It is made against the repair it postpones — a weak argument on a small commuter engine and a strong one on a large one, and the R 18 carries one of the biggest twins fitted to a production motorcycle. Nobody opens an engine of that size casually. PM246P14 is the fine element for owners who look at the machine in those terms: something to be kept in good order for a long time rather than something to be optimised.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven closing to 14 microns, the fine medium for this airbox
- Rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec, against 5,050 for the standard woven element
- Filtration comes from the depth of the material, not from a closer weave
- Used entirely without oil, so nothing can be drawn through onto the sensors
- Around twice the filtering area of a typical performance element
- Straight swap in the standard airbox, washed and refitted rather than replaced
What fine filtration is actually protecting
Airborne mineral dust does its damage slowly and in places that are expensive to reach: the bore, the rings, the valve seats. None of it shows on the outside of an engine, and by the time it does show, what is needed is not a filter. On a machine with a long intended life and a very large engine, moving the balance further towards retention is a reasonable thing to want even though the benefit will never be visible. That is the honest shape of it: an insurance argument, not an improvement one, and it should be recognised as such before anything is bought.
Paid for in flow
The price of the finer mat is a rated 1,800 l/m²/sec where the standard element is rated at 5,050 through the same area. More retention, less flow: one exchange, not a ranking, and the P14 sits at a different point on it rather than above the P08. On a large twin that spends its life low in the rev range, most of the flow given up is flow the engine was never going to call for, which makes this a comparatively cheap trade here. It will not add power either way, since no element inside an unmodified airbox does, and it should not be bought in the hope that it might.
Care and cleaning
A depth-loading mat asks for patience rather than pressure. Hold the air line to the clean face, work slowly across the panel and let the load come back out through the face that took it in; blowing from the dirty side drives it into the middle of the material. Water at hand temperature with a little mild detergent handles what remains, rinsed until it runs clear. Then moving air only, until the element is completely dry, because heat of any kind ruins the medium. The maintenance sheet for PM246P14 is under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the BMW R 18 of 2020 to 2026, in the series airbox. One machine appears on the list, and this housing is not shared with anything else in the range. The same box is also catalogued with the standard PM246S weave and with the racing PM246S F1-85, so all three media are available for the one motorcycle. The year span is shown in the Fitment tab.
