A filter can only hand back the restriction it created itself, and in the intake system of a road-legal motorcycle that share is smaller than most people assume. The Speed Twin 1200 draws its air through an intake path shaped by noise legislation, water ingress and packaging long before the element is reached: a snorkel of fixed cross-section. The P08 F1-85 replaces one component in that chain with a dry polyester weave rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec. What it cannot do is enlarge everything upstream of itself.
Key Features
- An aperture of 85 µm at 15,000 l/m²/sec — roughly three times the airflow rating of the standard P08
- Retention is what pays for that: 80 µm on the P08, a step coarser here, traded for flow
- Racing medium, dry polyester, never oiled — nothing can reach the air sensor or the throttle bodies
- Drops into the standard airbox as a direct replacement, leaving modification, remap and homologation alone
- Sprint Filter design it washable and reusable, to last the life of the motorcycle
- Warranty: two years from the date of purchase
What the flow figure actually describes
15,000 l/m²/sec is a property of the material, measured as material: so many litres through so much area in so much time. It says what the weave is capable of passing, not what a 1200 cc twin behind a road airbox will ask of it. Fitted into that box, the element inherits every limit the box already had. This is why an honest description of a drop-in filter talks about restriction being low and staying low rather than about power, and why anyone expecting a felt difference on a standard, unmodified Speed Twin 1200 will be disappointed.
The side of the trade nobody advertises
Three times the flow rating comes from a coarser weave, and 85 µm is one step behind the 80 µm of the standard P08. In a race environment that is a reasonable bargain: the engine is stripped on an hours count, the oil is changed constantly, and the marginal particles that a coarser aperture lets through never get the mileage to matter. On a motorcycle that will cover tens of thousands of road kilometres between top-end inspections, the same bargain is a poor one. The P08 remains the medium built for road and track together, and the P14 at 14 µm is the answer where the air carries dust.
Care and cleaning
The starting restriction is recoverable: compressed air, clean side, blown outwards, and the PM217S F1-85 is where it began. What the air line leaves behind comes off with water and a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear, after which the element dries fully in open air. Heat and flame play no part, and it is always refitted dry — nothing is oiled before cleaning or after. The Downloads tab holds the maintenance sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Triumph Speed Twin 1200, 2018–2026. The same element covers five machines built around this airbox — the Speed Twin 900 and Speed Twin 1200, and the Thruxton 1200 in R, RS and TFC form. The full list with model years is in the Fitment tab.
