Manufacture and Tolerance
Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

Öhlins holds the free length at 175 mm and the inner diameter at 51 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
What This Rate Does
If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
How a Rear Spring Works
The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.
Applications
Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.
Fitting
Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
