DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 06420-24 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80 N/mm, 250 mm long with a 63 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Inner diameter 63 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- 120 mm of usable stroke
- Öhlins part number 06420-24
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Measured spring rate 80 N/mm
- Free length 250 mm
How Öhlins Makes Them
Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.
Size and Rate
Öhlins holds the free length at 250 mm and the inner diameter at 63 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Where This Rate Belongs
A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.
Applications
Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?
Installation
The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
