Why the Rate Holds
Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

Choosing 80 N/mm
Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
How a Rear Spring Works
The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.
Applications
Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.
Installation
Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
