Why the Rate Holds
Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

Where This Rate Belongs
A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.
Installation
Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
