How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.
Dimensions
Öhlins holds the free length at 250 mm and the inner diameter at 61 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Choosing 60 N/mm
This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Rate and the Linkage
Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.

Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.
Installation
Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
