Manufacture and Tolerance
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

Where This Rate Belongs
If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.
Applications
A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.
What Fitting Involves
Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
