DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00698-03 is a shock absorber spring rated at 38 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Measured spring rate 38 N/mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- 132 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Öhlins part number 00698-03
- Free length 230 mm
Why the Rate Holds
Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.
Dimensions
The 57 mm bore and 230 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 38 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Choosing 38 N/mm
Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
What the Rear Spring Decides
On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.
Applications
Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.
Fitting
Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
