How Öhlins Makes Them
Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

Öhlins holds the free length at 180 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Choosing 27 N/mm
A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
Rate and the Linkage
Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.
Fitting
Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
