How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

What This Rate Does
If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.
Applications
Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.
Fitting
Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
