How Öhlins Makes Them
The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.
Size and Rate
Öhlins holds the free length at 165 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Choosing 100 N/mm
Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
What the Rear Spring Decides
A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.
Applications
This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.
Fitting
Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
