DescriptionThe whole story▼

Not the Old F800GS
BMW revived the name in 2024 for a detuned F900GS with cast wheels and simpler suspension. It shares nothing with the chain-driven 798 cc bike that carried the badge a decade earlier.
Eighty-Seven Horsepower
From the 895 cc twin, which is enough to make the bike quick without making it intimidating. BMW aimed it at riders stepping up rather than at anybody chasing a figure.
Light for the Class
The 2024 platform shed a considerable amount over the F850GS it replaced, and the F800GS inherits all of that. It is easier to handle at walking pace than anything else BMW sells with a GS badge.
A Current Model
Most of these are still in their first ownership and still covered. Anything fitted to one should come off again without argument at a dealer.
What the Switch Guards Against
Riding away with the stand down, which on a left-hand bend ends badly and quickly. It is a genuine protection on a road bike.
The Worst Place on the Motorcycle
Inches from the road surface, behind the wheel, cleaned with a pressure lance after every ride. Nothing electrical lasts long there.
Or When It Breaks
A bent stand on a loaded bike is common, and a replacement is not always to hand. Removing the assembly is sometimes the practical answer.
Not a Short Circuit
There is a difference between completing a circuit correctly and bridging two pins, and the electronics can tell.
Not a Street Modification
On a registered motorcycle that still has a stand, this removes a protection and adds nothing. It belongs on a track bike.
Why the Stand Is Always First
Every preparation list starts the same way, because until the engine will run with a gear selected nothing else can be checked. Fitting this before the mirrors, the plate and the lights come off saves a second trip round the motorcycle.
