The Best Chassis in the Class
Yamaha gave the 2017 R6 the previous R1's aerodynamics, a magnesium subframe and 43 mm KYB forks. The engine was carried over and criticised at the time; the chassis has since proved good enough that these machines still win races.
Where They All Went
Onto circuits. Euro 5 ended road sales in 2021 and the supersport class carried on regardless, largely on these bikes. A registered 2017 to 2022 R6 that has never seen a track is now the unusual case.
What Comes Off With the Lights
The indicator and horn controls, and the positions they occupied. Once the bodywork has no indicators in it, those buttons are places the thumb has to learn to skip past rather than functions it needs.
Standard Loom Retained
This is a race cluster rather than a superbike one. Yamaha's connector and the factory ECU are used, so the traction control and power modes continue to work without an aftermarket harness.
A Sixteen Thousand RPM Cockpit
At the top of a gear everything on the handlebar is vibrating hard. A one-piece machined body with a bolted clamp stays tight under that where two mouldings clipped together gradually develop play.
Crash Economics
Supersport machines go down. Over a season the relevant question is not what a part costs once but how often it has to be bought, and a milled housing scuffs where a moulded one cracks.
Black Anodised
One finish, converted into the surface. On a bike wearing race bodywork and a number board it is the obvious choice.
