The Symptoms
Hard starting and an uneven idle, with nothing obvious pointing at the cause. It is one of the more frustrating faults to diagnose on a modern motorcycle.
How the Tank Breathes Afterwards
Fuel drawn out has to be replaced by air coming in. A proper vent fitting handles that; a cut hose behind the swingarm does it badly.
Continuity, Not Function
The controller cannot tell whether vapour is flowing. It only knows whether the coil is there, which is what makes this straightforward.
Space Behind the Engine
Luggage mounts, the shock and any aftermarket silencer all want the same area. Removing the canister makes all three easier to work with.
Storage Matters
Keep the hoses out of sunlight and the vessel dry and the parts will refit years later without argument.
Refit Before Selling
