DescriptionThe whole story▼
March circuit days start cold. The air in the pit box has not warmed up, tyre warmers are doing most of the talking, and the first session of the morning is slower than the last session of the afternoon by a margin that has nothing to do with the rider. A Ducati Panigale 1299 Superleggera of 2017 spends such days in the hands of someone changing one thing at a time. Accossato's front pad for it is the AGPA106, and this article carries the ZXC ceramic racing material, described by the company as a ceramic compound intended for racing.
Key Features
- Front brake pads for the Ducati Panigale 1299 Superleggera, model year 2017
- AGPA106ZXC: the AGPA106 carrier with the ceramic racing material
- Accossato calls the mixture ceramic and places it in competition
- For weekends spent adjusting the machine between sessions
- Two pads per box, one caliper's worth
- The front wheel of this Ducati runs two calipers, so plan on two boxes
- The same carrier is also available in ST, EV1 and EV2
- No German ABE on record; offered for competition use
Construction and Material Quality
Ceramic and racing are the two words Accossato attaches to this friction layer, and the firm does not stretch them further. A compound sold for competition is bought by people who will judge it themselves over a weekend, not by anyone looking for a quiet life on the commute. The hardware under the face is the AGPA106, identical to the version used for the road-biased materials, so the only variable in a back-to-back test is the compound. That is the point for a rider working through settings on a 1299 Superleggera, where changing two things at once teaches nothing.
A Cold Morning in the Pit Box
Everything reads differently before the sun is properly up. Tyre pressures come up less, the track surface takes half the day to offer real grip, and a braking point that worked yesterday afternoon arrives too early at nine in the morning. Riders who get anything out of an early session accept that and spend it gathering information rather than chasing a time. On a light machine with carbon wheels the effect is pronounced, because the 1299 Superleggera changes direction so willingly that a cold front tyre is the only thing holding the rider back.
A disciplined box routine makes the day add up. Change one item between runs and write down what happened. Note how far the lever came back on the last lap. Have a look at the front pads when the wheel is out, and if a new set has just gone in, spend the out lap and the first tour of the circuit bringing it up to temperature with a run of increasingly firm applications. Let the machine cool on its stand instead of leaving the lever tied back, and read the fluid once everything has settled rather than while the discs are still ticking.
Fitment and Compatibility
The Superleggera has its own line in Accossato's list and this front article belongs to it, model year 2017 and no other. Owners of the standard 1299 or the 1299 S should look to the entries written for those machines instead. At the rear of the Superleggera the AGPA42 does the equivalent job for the same single season. Accossato lists no brake disc for this model. Because the front wheel is clamped from two sides, a complete change means two boxes, and a spare pair is usual for a race weekend.
Road Approval
We have no German ABE for the AGPA106ZXC and nothing from a test house to accompany it, so the article is catalogued for competition and closed-course use rather than for the road.
Scope of Delivery
Two AGPA106 pads in the ceramic racing material, packed as one set for one front caliper of the Panigale 1299 Superleggera.
