In return comes the fine airborne fraction that a coarse weave passes without noticing, the material that does the slow, invisible work inside an engine over years of dry stages. Finer means stricter and never simply better; both figures move together, in opposite directions. Compressed air on the clean side, worked outward until the mat is open again — that alone handles most of what a stage puts into it. Anything left after that comes out in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water is clean. Then the element dries in moving air for as long as it needs, with no heat source involved at any point and no flame anywhere near it, and it is refitted only when dry right through.
