Buying for the years that are left

The arithmetic of a washable element is simple and slow: it costs a great deal once and nothing afterwards, so it rewards distance and time. R127S F1-85-SBK is priced at roughly five times a conventional panel for this airbox and more than five times a typical item in the Sprint Filter range, which is a long payback in consumables alone and honestly no payback at all in those terms for most owners. What it buys instead is a part inspected and returned to a known state rather than left to drift, on a machine that will not be superseded by a newer one on the same catalogue page.

The honest limit

None of this is a power case. An element sitting in an unmodified airbox does not make a standard Panigale 1299 noticeably stronger, and the highest flow rating in the range does not change that; a rating is drawn on only while a large demand is being held, which is a track pattern rather than a road one. The benefit worth paying for is stability — an intake resistance that is low and, more to the point, comes back to the same figure after every service instead of creeping upward between them.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air, applied to the clean face and worked outward, is the whole of the normal service. If the cloth has been left with a film that will not blow off, wash it by hand in warm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Then let it dry in still air on its own time; polyester and heat do not get on, so keep hot-air guns, radiators and flames away from it entirely. It returns to the airbox dry, with nothing applied.
